The SoHo Alliance was formed in the early-1980s as an umbrella organization representing the many groups that opposed two real estate developers who requested zoning variances to construct high-rise residential buildings on West Broadway. Member organizations included the SoHo Artists’ Association, the SoHo Landmarks Committee, the Greene Street Block Association, the Southwest SoHo Preservation Association, the Washington Market Community Association, and the Downtown Independent Democrats. The SoHo Alliance exists today as a single organization that has been fighting to preserve SoHo’s built environment and quality of life for over 40 years through activism, advocacy, and litigation.
