1998-2000
I moved from London in 1998 and lived at 265 Lafayette. I worked at 580 Broadway until the end of 2000
I was a producer working for a fashion photographer
The 90s isn’t the 70s but still, so much has changed since I got here. Parking lots replaced by a Nespresso store and the Crosby st hotel, Mekong on Price st, The Prince st post office turning first into Restoration Hardware and then an Apple store. Pravda. The internet cafe (!) on Prince and Lafayette..
I miss all of it – it was so exciting to be here from London and and it was real sensory overload stuff. I absorbed all of it like a sponge and would pay anything to go back to 1998 for a week, just to relive my arrival in this crazy town
Walking around late at night in the summer of 1999, marveling at the heat, the noise, the lights, the energy, the people… and being permanently dumfounded that I lived here
My roommate at 265 Lafayette was our leaseholder and she moved to San Francisco. The landlord decided they could get more than $1600 (!!) for a big two bedroom on the corner of Prince st and that was that
It was a wild ride
