When did you live/work/visit in SoHo?
1970s and 80s, and early 2000s.
Where did you live/work/visit in SoHo?
Pearl Paint, major art galleries on West Broadway, MaGoos, Fanelli’s, Ken’s Broome Street Bar, the big bars on Prince and Spring Streets, inexpensive Italian restaurants…
What was your occupation when you lived/worked in SoHo?
Art student, artist, graphic designer
If you’re a SoHo old-timer, what do you miss most about SoHo in the early days?
The smell of yeast in the air, which I was told emanated from a brewery on the far West side of SoHo; the remnants of colored fabrics that were strewn and blown about on the cobblestone streets…
Oh, and the cheap rents that could still be found in the 60’s & 70s!
If you used to live in SoHo but no longer live here, why did you leave?
I was, very simply, “priced out.” (And the same happened to me in the West village in the early to mid 90s.)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The profiteering of landlords and of the ever expanding New York University were the major factors in the extinction of the neighborhood “as we knew it.”
