Worked one block below soho from 1971-1986. Lived one block below from 1984-present
Worked in city government. My colleagues and I walked to soho at lunchtime often to eat at "Food" on Prince the original "hip" place and the only one in the early days. I got my cat (then kitten) from a litter at Food. Willie lived until 1990 at age 18.
It was a discovery everyday. Artists. Buildings etc. Today it is too "precious" for my taste but NYC never stays the same and I love that too
I worked and still now live a block from Soho in what is now TriBeCa. Never really left it
It was seeing an entire world emerge from a dank and dark forgotten part of NYC
I know old timers bemoan the changes and the shopping invasion but I love to see NYC change over and over in every Boro and every neighborhood and who is to say what is the perfect era. I find that rigidity dumb I was born here and I hope it keeps changing
